How to care for quartzite countertops

Quartzite is natural stone formed when sandstone recrystallises under heat and pressure. It is hard, it is porous to some degree, and it varies from slab to slab more than people expect.

Everyday cleaning

Warm water and a soft cloth day to day, and a stone-safe cleaner when you need more. Avoid abrasives and acidic sprays.

Sealing

Seal quartzite periodically, using the same water test as granite: if water darkens the stone and is slow to release, it is ready.

How often depends heavily on the specific quartzite. Some are extremely dense; others drink more. Ask us about the slab you chose.

The etching question

Some stones sold as quartzite contain calcite, which means they can etch where acids sit on them the way marble does. This is one of the more common surprises in stone.

We would rather set the expectation honestly for your slab than promise that all quartzite behaves identically. Wipe acidic spills promptly regardless.

Heat and knives

Quartzite handles heat well, which is part of why it works outdoors under cover. Still use a trivet and a cutting board.

FAQ

Questions we hear often

Does quartzite need sealing?
Yes, periodically. Use the water test rather than a fixed schedule, since density varies a lot between quartzites.
Can quartzite etch like marble?
Some can, because some stones sold as quartzite contain calcite. Ask us about the specific slab you are considering and wipe acidic spills promptly.
